We had a family Elecare party for Jalen today. Ma showed the video "Light and Hope: Jalen's Story" so that Granny could see it. I also talked a little about what will happen during this elemental diet and food trial process. Then Brendan helped me fill and pass out tiny cups of Elecare (or water for those that were not so brave) to make a toast to Jalen's health. Then Jalen got to go play video games with his brothers, cousin and favorite Uncle Tony. Jalen really enjoyed himself, and I hope that this will help him feel empowered to stay the course.
The word on the taste of Elecare? One person said it reminded them of coffee. One said, "It's just okay" (which is what I thought when I first tasted it). My sister did not like the smell, but thought the taste wasn't bad. Personally, I think if it were chocolate flavored I'd like it supremely better!
Other side health notes:
1.) Jalen had a nosebleed last night. He has not had one in a long time this time, but he is prone to them.
2.) Jalen finally pooped again today, a full 4 days after the suppository bm. I will discuss this with Dr. Malkani tomorrow to see if he needs regular suppositories, Miralax, or more water.
3.) I noted that right after the suppository and for a few days following that his appetite really increased, whereas before the suppository (and for the last 2-3 days) his appetite was down. He was barely drinking the Elecare today. My theory is that when his colon is "backed up" he eats less (or doesn't feel hungry). More observation and research are needed to prove or disprove this theory.
